In alopecia areata, immune system cells attack the rapidly growing cells in hair follicles. This can lead to hair loss on the scalp and elsewhere. The NIAMS supported the establishment of a National Alopecia Areata Registry, providing a central information source for researchers, and a liaison between patients and investigators.
